Disney California Adventure is bringing Pandora to life in an unexpected location, with the Avatar destination set to transform a portion of the current Hollywood Backlot area. This marks a dramatic shift for the park’s landscape, promising to replace the existing movie studio theming with James Cameron’s luminous alien world.
The project remains in early development stages, with Disney keeping specific details under wraps for now. Construction timelines and attraction formats will be revealed later as planning progresses, but the Hollywood Backlot location suggests Disney has ambitious plans requiring substantial space.
A Sad Goodbye to Monsters, Inc.
However, this transformation comes with a bittersweet farewell. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close permanently in early 2026 to make way for the Avatar experience. The beloved dark ride has entertained guests since the park’s early years, taking visitors through key scenes from the Pixar film with impressive animatronics and immersive environments.
The timing aligns with renewed interest in the Avatar franchise, as James Cameron continues expanding the film series with new releases.
