New details have emerged about the long-anticipated Villains Land coming to Walt Disney World. And, while the project is shaping up to be a substantial addition to the resort, some fans will be raising an eyebrow at the direction it appears to be heading.
Disney had already revealed that the space would include two major attractions, dining, and shopping. But, according to a recent report from The Wrap, the land has been downgraded from its originally envisioned darker tone to a more family-friendly experience.
Villains Land Attractions
Four headline experiences are said to be in the works.
The Emperor’s New Groove is getting a family-friendly coaster, a fun and somewhat unexpected IP choice that should bring some real personality to the land.
The marquee attraction appears to be a major indoor water-based ride themed to Maleficent, which has the potential to be genuinely impressive if given the scale it deserves.
A restaurant featuring a dinner show experience with Hades, Pain, and Panic is also planned, which is arguably one of the more exciting inclusions. Done well, it could be one of Walt Disney World’s most memorable dining experiences.
Rounding things out is a potential Ursula spinner, though that one remains unconfirmed for now.
Why the Shift to Family-Friendly?
The shift in creative direction has been linked to Josh D’Amaro, who until recently served as Disney’s Chairman of Experiences. That role is now set to change significantly: D’Amaro was elected CEO of The Walt Disney Company in a unanimous board vote, effective 18th March 2026, succeeding longtime chief Bob Iger.
With D’Amaro stepping up to run the entire company, it remains to be seen how much direct influence he’ll continue to have over individual park projects and whether his successor at Disney Experiences will maintain the same creative direction for Villains Land.
No opening timeline has been confirmed.
