Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen at Magic Kingdom in early May, over a year after closing in January 2025 for what has turned out to be one of the most substantial refurbishments in the attraction’s history.
The scope of the work is significant. The ride’s entire track has been replaced, Audio-Animatronics have been refreshed throughout, and new gold props have been added across the attraction.
The opening scene has also been updated, giving returning guests something new to clock even before the first drop.
The most visual change, though, is inside the Rainbow Caverns. The iconic section has been transformed with glowing, multicoloured waterfalls and pools, a considerable step up from what was there before.
