Disney has shared more details about the new Cars land coming to Magic Kingdom. In social media posts, Imagineers shared that Piston Peak National Park will be Magic Kingdom’s largest expansion in its 50+ year history.
The new land will take inspiration from the Rocky Mountain area and the history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks.
Although it’s sad news for Rivers of America fans – the area will close along with Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat on July 7th to make way for construction.

Disney’s using “Parkitecture” – the National Park Service’s approach to building structures that complement rather than compete with natural environments. The result should be visitor lodges, ranger stations, and trails that actually feel like they belong in wilderness settings.
The landscape design sounds impressive: natural tree barriers, mountain peaks with waterfalls, and geysers that connect visually with Big Thunder Mountain.
Disney also revealed there will be a new original character called Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore, based on “J. Audubon Woodlore” from Disney’s classic animated shorts of the 1950s. He will appear as an animatronic in the pre-show for the rally racers ride.
The construction extends beyond Big Thunder Mountain, where Disney’s also building their first dedicated Villains land with two major attractions. Magic Kingdom is getting a serious makeover.
